Tesla Offer Negotiation Calculator for Tesla Salary Negotiation and RSUs vs Options
A Tesla offer has one decision no other big tech offer asks you to make. Candidates report being allowed to take part or all of the new-hire grant as stock options at three options per RSU, struck at the grant-date price. Three options beat one RSU only if Tesla stock is more than 50 percent above that price when you sell. At a flat price the options are worth nothing. Settle that choice first, then counter on the grant and the sign-on.

Direct answer
Tesla offer negotiation moves most on the RSU grant and the sign-on bonus, and least on base, which coaches who work Tesla offers describe as slightly below big tech peers. Nothing vests for the first year, then 6.25 percent a quarter, so ask for a sign-on sized to the first-year gap and a larger grant if a competing offer pays more over four years. If you are offered options at 3 per RSU, they only win if the stock ends more than 50 percent above the grant price.
Run the numbers
Value the Tesla offer at every quarter you might leave, as RSUs or as options.
Enter the base, sign-on and RSU grant from the Tesla offer, how much of the grant you would take as options, and a share price scenario. Add what you earn today and, if you hold one, a competing offer. The calculator shows what each offer has actually paid you at months 6, 9, 12, 18, 24, 36 and 48, charts where three options overtake one RSU, and names the counter that closes the gap.

Stock is counted when it vests: 25 percent at one year, then 6.25 percent a quarter. The share price change applies to every vest, and option strikes equal the grant price. The competing grant is held at today's price. Figures are before tax. The grant, schedule and repayment terms in your offer letter govern. This is career coaching, not tax or legal advice.
The problem
Here is a typical case. You earn 185,000 dollars a year. Tesla offers a 180,000 dollar base, a 25,000 dollar sign-on and a 240,000 dollar RSU grant over four years. A competing offer pays 195,000 dollars in cash, a 40,000 dollar sign-on and a 280,000 dollar grant that vests evenly every quarter. On the phone that sounds close. At a flat share price Tesla is 103,750 dollars behind at month 9, because nothing has vested and the sign-on would be repaid, and still 115,000 behind at month 48. Then the recruiter asks whether you want RSUs or options, and the answer moves the four-year number by up to 240,000 dollars in either direction.
How Counteroffer handles it
Paste the Tesla offer and any competing offer into Counteroffer. It reads the grant, vesting and repayment language from your letter, lays both offers out quarter by quarter against your current pay, shows what the RSU or options choice is worth at the share prices you consider plausible, and decides whether the sign-on, the grant or the repayment terms is the lever worth pulling. Then it writes the counter email to the Tesla recruiter with one number per lever and the reason behind each.
The numbers
What a Tesla grant is worth as RSUs or as options, at six share prices.
Every figure comes from the same formula the calculator above runs. The Tesla offer is a 180,000 dollar base with no cash bonus, a 25,000 dollar sign-on and a 240,000 dollar grant vesting 25 percent at one year and 6.25 percent a quarter after that. Options are three per RSU, struck at the grant price. The competing offer pays 195,000 dollars a year, a 40,000 dollar sign-on and a 280,000 dollar grant vesting evenly each quarter, held at today's price. The share price change is applied to every vest. The first row is the size of Tesla's fall in calendar 2022.
| TSLA at vest vs grant price | 4-year stock, all RSUs | 4-year stock, all options | Tesla 48-month total, RSUs | Tesla 48-month total, options | RSUs vs competing offer at 48 months | Options vs competing offer at 48 months |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| -65% (2022-size fall) | $84,000 | $0 | $829,000 | $745,000 | -$271,000 | -$355,000 |
| -25% | $180,000 | $0 | $925,000 | $745,000 | -$175,000 | -$355,000 |
| Flat | $240,000 | $0 | $985,000 | $745,000 | -$115,000 | -$355,000 |
| +25% | $300,000 | $180,000 | $1,045,000 | $925,000 | -$55,000 | -$175,000 |
| +50% (break-even) | $360,000 | $360,000 | $1,105,000 | $1,105,000 | +$5,000 | +$5,000 |
| +100% | $480,000 | $720,000 | $1,225,000 | $1,465,000 | +$125,000 | +$365,000 |
Three things come out of this table. First, at or below the grant price the options are worth zero, so taking options turns a 240,000 dollar grant into a bet that pays nothing in four of these six rows. Second, the two choices tie at exactly plus 50 percent, and options only pull ahead above it: at plus 100 percent they are worth 720,000 dollars against 480,000. Third, in a 2022-style 65 percent fall the RSUs still keep 84,000 dollars of value. If the competing offer is ahead at a flat price, the counter belongs on the RSU grant, because the RSUs are what carry value in the bad scenarios.
The stat everyone quotes
"Take the options. Tesla stock always goes up, and three is more than one."
Three options are worth more than one RSU only if the stock ends more than 50 percent above the grant price. Below that the RSU wins, and at or below the strike the options are worth nothing.
The arithmetic is short. One RSU is worth the share price when it vests. One option is worth the share price minus the strike, and never less than zero. With the strike set at the grant price, three options equal one RSU when three times the gain equals the full price, which happens at 1.5 times the strike. Candidates on Blind arrived at the same plus 50 percent break-even in threads seven years apart.
Tesla has given both kinds of year. In calendar 2022 the stock lost about 65 percent, its worst year on record, and an option struck at the start of that year was worth nothing at the end of it. A grant taken as RSUs lost value in that year too, but it kept a third of it. That asymmetry is the whole decision: RSUs pay something in every scenario, options pay more only in the strong ones.
The ratio itself is reported by candidates, not published by Tesla, and Blind posters describe RSU share counts set from a 30-day average price while option strikes use the closing price on the grant date. Read your own grant terms, including whether the options are incentive or nonqualified stock options and how long you have to exercise after leaving, before you treat any of this as fixed.
How to do it
How to negotiate a Tesla offer, step by step.
Read the grant terms before the number
Find the vesting language, whether the grant is quoted in dollars or shares, and the price used to convert one into the other. Levels.fyi listings show 25 percent vesting at one year and 6.25 percent a quarter after, with some listings describing monthly vesting after the first year. Ask the recruiter which applies to you and for the exact first vest date.
Decide RSUs or options before you counter
If the letter offers a choice, decide it first, because it changes which lever matters. Use the share price chart in the calculator above: if you would not bet on the stock rising more than 50 percent from the grant price, RSUs are worth more to you. Many candidates split the grant, which caps both the downside and the upside.
Price what you walk away from
Add up the stock at your current job that would vest in the next twelve months, the annual bonus you forfeit by resigning and anything you would have to repay. That total is the floor for the Tesla sign-on. The sign-on bonus calculator turns it into a make-whole figure before and after the 22 percent federal supplemental withholding.
Line the competing offer up at the same quarters
A Google offer with front-loaded vesting pays far more in year 1 than a Tesla cliff schedule, a Meta offer vests evenly from the first quarter, and an Nvidia offer may carry the same one-year cliff, and an OpenAI offer pays part of its value in private equity you cannot sell on the vest date. Compare cumulative pay at the month you expect to leave, not the annual headline.
Counter once, with one number per lever
Ask for a sign-on sized to the first-year gap and a grant figure sized to the gap at month 48. Keep any base request modest and inside the band for the level, since base is the part Tesla moves least. The counteroffer calculator sets how far above the offer each number should sit.
Check the sign-on repayment terms before you sign
If the letter makes the sign-on repayable in full inside the first year, ask for prorated repayment in the same email. You would owe the gross amount on money paid to you net of withholding. The sign-on bonus repayment calculator shows what leaving early would actually cost.

Subject: Re: Tesla offer for [role], [level] Hi [name], Thank you for the offer. I am excited about the team and the work, and I would like to get to a yes. Two things stand between me and signing. Nothing vests in my first year, and I would leave about [amount] in unvested stock and bonus at my current company. I also hold a written offer from [company] that pays about [amount] more over four years at today's share price. Could you move the sign-on bonus to [amount] and the RSU grant to [amount]? With those changes I would be ready to sign this week. If the sign-on is repayable in full in year one, I would also ask that repayment be prorated by months worked. On the equity choice, I would like to take [all RSUs / X percent as options]. Could you confirm the conversion ratio and the price used for the grant and the strike? Thank you, [your name]

Frequently asked
Questions people ask about Tesla offer negotiation.
Does Tesla negotiate salary?
Yes, but base moves the least. Coaches who work Tesla offers describe base as small-to-moderate movement and the new-hire equity as the most flexible part, with five-figure sign-on improvements fairly common. A written competing offer and the unvested pay you give up are the strongest reasons. Ask once, with one number per lever.
Should I take RSUs or options at Tesla?
Take RSUs unless you expect the stock to end more than 50 percent above the grant price. At three options per RSU struck at the grant price, the two tie at plus 50 percent, options win above it, and options are worth nothing at or below the strike. Splitting the grant is a reasonable middle course. The chart in the calculator above shows both at your chosen price.
What is the Tesla RSU vesting schedule?
Levels.fyi listings show Tesla new-hire grants vesting over four years: 25 percent at the one-year mark, then 6.25 percent every quarter. Some listings describe monthly vesting after the first year instead. Either way nothing vests in the first twelve months, which is why the sign-on matters more in a Tesla offer than in an offer that vests from the first quarter.
How much is the Tesla sign on bonus?
Tesla does not publish a range. Coaching firms describe Tesla sign-ons running from the low five figures up to six figures for senior and hard-to-hire specialties, and candidates on Blind report figures as low as 10,000 dollars at junior levels. Size your own ask from what you forfeit by resigning and the first-year gap to any competing offer.
Is Tesla pay lower than other big tech companies?
Generally, for similar disciplines. Coaches who work Tesla offers describe its pay ranges as below other big tech companies and its base as competitive but slightly below peers. That is why the case for Tesla usually rests on the equity, and why the RSU grant is the lever worth pushing when a competing offer pays more.
Can you negotiate a Tesla new grad offer?
A little. Junior and new grad offers sit close to the first number because the supply of candidates is large, so realistic asks are a modest sign-on, relocation and a start date that suits you. A written competing offer is what moves the grant. New grads are also the hires most likely to leave in year one, so check the sign-on repayment terms.
Does a falling Tesla stock price change what I should ask for?
Yes. A lower share price at grant means more shares for the same dollar grant, so a dollar-denominated grant is not hurt by a drop before you sign. A drop after you sign cuts the value of every vest. If you think the price is volatile, the RSU choice and a larger sign-on both move risk off you, because cash and RSUs keep value when options do not.
Can Tesla rescind an offer if you negotiate?
It is rare. Offers get pulled after ultimatums, invented competing offers or repeated rounds, not after one professional counter. In Fidelity's 2022 survey, 85 percent of young professionals who negotiated got at least part of what they asked for. See whether you can lose a job offer by negotiating for the patterns that do cost offers.
