Netflix Offer Negotiation Calculator for Netflix Salary Negotiation and Stock Options

A Netflix offer is one number. The postings say pay "consists solely of an annual salary", there is no bonus, and you decide each year how much of it to take as stock options. So the posted range is the whole package, and the mistake candidates make is comparing it with the base salary of a competing offer. Compare it with total compensation, place it in the band for your level, and counter once.

Direct answer

Netflix offer negotiation happens inside the posted band for your level. On October 24, 2026, 205 of 227 US Netflix postings printed an annual range, with a median of 388,000 to 566,000 dollars, and the range covers salary plus any stock options you elect, because Netflix pays no bonus. Compare the offer with a competing offer's total compensation, then counter toward the top quarter of the band or ask for the next level.

Run the numbers

Place the Netflix number in the band for your level, then line it up against a stock-heavy offer.

Pick the band printed on Netflix postings for your level, or type the range from your own posting. Enter the annual number in the Netflix offer and the share you plan to take as stock options. Add the competing offer as base, target bonus, 4-year RSUs and sign-on. The calculator shows where the Netflix number sits in the band, what each offer has paid at months 6, 12, 24, 36 and 48, and what to ask for.

The problem

Here is a typical case. Netflix offers 430,000 dollars to a Software Engineer 5, a band the postings print as 388,000 to 558,000, so the number sits 25 percent of the way up. A public company offers a 230,000 dollar base, a 15 percent target bonus, 640,000 dollars of RSUs over four years on a 12-month cliff and a 50,000 dollar sign-on. Netflix is 100,000 ahead after six months, 44,500 behind at month 12 when the bonus, sign-on and first vest all land, and 28,000 behind after four years. Countering to 516,000, the 75th percentile mark of the band, turns that into a lead and is worth 344,000 dollars over the same four years.

How Counteroffer handles it

Paste the Netflix offer, the posting and any competing offer into Counteroffer. It reads the level, the posted band, the annual number and your option election, puts the competing base, bonus, RSUs and sign-on on the same monthly timeline, and tells you whether the right ask is a bigger number at this level or the next level up. Then it writes the counter email to the recruiter with one number and one reason, so you send a single clean ask before the deadline.

The numbers

Netflix posted pay bands by role family and engineering level.

We read every listing on Netflix's public job board on October 24, 2026. Of 227 US postings, 205 printed an annual range in the sentence "The range for this role is", and 212 described pay as your "personal top of market". The table shows the median bottom and top of that range for each role family and the exact band printed on most postings for each software engineering level. Netflix pays no bonus, so these ranges are the cash and options you take each year, not base salary alone.

Role family or level US postings with a range Median or most common min Median or most common max
Software Engineer 4 6 $250,000 $413,000
Software Engineer 5 (10 of 15 postings) 15 $388,000 $558,000
Software Engineer 6 (5 of 7 postings) 7 $499,000 $900,000
AI Platform and ML engineering 18 $466,000 $750,000
Software, data and security engineering 61 $388,000 $605,000
Product manager 23 $440,000 $725,000
Engineering manager 9 $436,000 $791,000
Finance, marketing, legal and partnerships 27 $225,000 $353,000
Content, studio, design and other 67 $290,000 $470,000
All US postings with an annual range 205 $388,000 $566,000

Three findings matter for a counter. First, the bands are wide: on 156 of 205 ranges the top is 1.55 to 1.85 times the bottom, and the median gap between bottom and top is 231,000 dollars, so where you land inside the band is a real negotiation. Second, the bands overlap: the most common Software Engineer 5 top, 558,000, is above the Software Engineer 6 bottom of 499,000, which is why the level decision can be worth more than a counter on the number. Third, the Software Engineer 5 band was identical on postings in New York, Los Gatos and remote US roles, so a remote location is not a reason for a lower number on these roles.

The stat everyone quotes

"Netflix already pays top of market, so there is nothing to negotiate."

Netflix says it pays your personal top of market inside a published band. Where in that band you land is decided by what the recruiter learns about your market, which is exactly what a counter supplies.

The line comes from Netflix itself. Its postings say that to determine "your personal top of market compensation", it relies on "market indicators" and your job family, background, skills and experience. That is a method, not a fixed price. The same posting then prints a band that is often more than 200,000 dollars wide.

The market indicator Netflix can read most easily is a written competing offer. If the recruiter has none, the first number is built from the role and your interviews alone. A competing offer, priced as total compensation per year rather than base salary, is the most direct way to show that your top of market is higher than the first number.

What does not work at Netflix is a long list of asks. There is no bonus to raise, no RSU grant to resize and usually no sign-on line in the letter, so the whole conversation is about one annual number and the level it is attached to. One counter with one number and one reason is the right shape.

How to do it

How to negotiate a Netflix offer, step by step.

01

Read the band on the posting you applied to

Scroll to the compensation paragraph near the end of the posting. It reads "The range for this role is" followed by two numbers. Pick the matching level in the calculator or type the range. If the title shows two levels, such as Software Engineer 4/5, ask which one the offer was built on. The salary range calculator does the same placement math for any posted range.

02

Ask the recruiter for the level in writing

Netflix titles carry a number, and the bands for adjacent levels overlap. A Software Engineer 5 offer at the top of its band can still pay less than a Software Engineer 6 offer near the bottom of the next band. If your scope, years and interview feedback fit the next level, that is the bigger ask and it should come first.

03

Price the competing offer as total compensation

Add base, the target bonus, one year of RSUs and the sign-on. Then look at the timeline, because a stock-heavy offer pays little before its first vest and a lot at month 12. A Google offer with front-loaded vesting or a Meta offer with quarterly vesting lands differently, and the calculator shows both at each month you might leave.

04

Decide your option election before you counter

Netflix postings say you choose each year how much of your pay to take as salary versus stock options. Netflix's SEC filings describe its options as fully vested at grant and exercisable for up to 10 years, even after you leave. The election does not change the total, so negotiate the total first and pick the split after you sign.

05

Counter once, with one number and one reason

Ask for a single annual figure inside the band for your level, and name the competing offer or the specific work that justifies it. Do not ask for a bonus or an RSU grant Netflix does not offer. If the number you need is above the band, ask for the next level instead. The counteroffer calculator sets how far above the offer that figure should sit.

06

Cover what you forfeit by resigning

If leaving your current job costs you an unvested RSU tranche or a bonus about to pay out, put a dollar figure on it and ask how Netflix handles it. Without a bonus or sign-on line, the usual answer is a higher annual number in year one, so size the counter to include it. The signing bonus calculator works out what to ask for.

Subject: Re: Netflix offer for [role] Hi [name], Thank you for the offer. I am excited about the team and the work, and I want to get to a yes. The posting lists the range for this role as [min] to [max], and the offer of [amount] sits at [percent] percent of it. I hold a written offer from [company] that comes to [total] a year in base, target bonus and RSUs, plus a [amount] sign-on. Given that, and [one specific reason: the streaming or ads systems you have built, a migration you led, scope at your current level], I would like to ask for [amount] a year. [If it applies: I would also like to confirm the level. My scope at [company] matches [next level], and I would like the offer to reflect that.] With that change I would be ready to sign this week. Thank you, [your name]

Frequently asked

Questions people ask about Netflix offer negotiation.

Can you negotiate with Netflix?

Yes, inside the posted band for your level. Netflix postings say pay is set at your personal top of market using market indicators, and the band on the median US posting we read on October 24, 2026 ran from 388,000 to 566,000 dollars. A written competing offer is the market indicator that moves the number most.

Does Netflix pay bonuses or RSUs?

No bonus and no RSU grant. Of 227 US postings we read, 213 say "we do not have bonuses", and 205 say you choose each year how much of your pay to take as salary versus stock options. The whole package is one annual number, so compare it with a competing offer's total compensation, not its base salary.

What is the salary range for a Netflix software engineer?

On October 24, 2026, most Software Engineer 4 postings printed 250,000 to 413,000 dollars, most Software Engineer 5 postings 388,000 to 558,000 and most Software Engineer 6 postings 499,000 to 900,000. AI Platform and ML engineering roles were posted at 466,000 to 750,000. These ranges include any stock options you elect.

How do Netflix stock options work for employees?

You choose each year how much of your pay to take as stock options instead of salary, according to Netflix postings. Netflix's SEC filings describe its options as fully vested at grant and exercisable for up to 10 years regardless of employment status. The election moves money between salary and options, it does not add to the total.

Does Netflix pay less for remote roles?

Not on the roles we checked. The Software Engineer 5 band of 388,000 to 558,000 dollars was printed identically on postings in New York, Los Gatos and remote US roles on October 24, 2026, and 84 of the 205 ranged US postings were remote. Read your own posting before accepting a location discount.

Is a Netflix offer better than a FAANG offer with RSUs?

Often in the first months and sometimes over four years, but not always at month 12. A stock-heavy offer pays its bonus, sign-on and first RSU vest at the one-year mark, so it can jump ahead then. Line both offers up at every month you might leave, as the calculator above does, and use the job offer comparison calculator for offers with different benefits.

Should I tell Netflix about a competing offer?

Yes, if it is real and in writing. Netflix says it sets pay from market indicators, and a competing offer is the clearest one you can give. Share the annual total and how it pays out, not the whole letter. The guide to negotiating two job offers covers the order of calls.

Can Netflix rescind an offer if I negotiate?

It is rare. Offers get pulled after ultimatums, invented competing offers or repeated rounds, not after one professional counter. In Fidelity's 2022 survey, 85 percent of young professionals who negotiated got at least part of what they asked for. See whether you can lose a job offer by negotiating for the patterns that do cost offers.
