The best salary negotiation script is short, warm, and ends with a clear ask: thank them, name one specific number, give a one-line reason tied to your value, and then stop talking. Below are word-for-word scripts for the moments that matter most, from deflecting the early "what are your expectations" to countering, holding your number, and responding to a no. This is career coaching, not legal or financial advice, and the numbers are placeholders to replace with your own benchmarked figures.

Script 1: Deflecting the early salary question

When a recruiter asks your expectations before you have a real offer, you can redirect:

"I would love to learn more about the role and the full scope first. I am confident we can find a number that works for both of us once I understand the responsibilities. What range do you have budgeted for this position?"

If pressed for a figure, give a researched range and anchor the bottom at your real target:

"Based on the market for this role, I am looking in the range of 115,000 to 130,000 USD, depending on the full package."

Build that range first with a market-rate benchmark.

Script 2: Countering the offer

Once you have an offer and a benchmarked number, deliver the counter cleanly:

"Thank you so much for the offer, I am really excited about this role. Based on my experience and the market range I am seeing, I was hoping we could get the base to 125,000 USD. Is there flexibility there?"

Then go quiet. Silence after the ask is your strongest tool; let them respond first. To pick the figure, use a counteroffer calculator.

Script 3: Holding your number under pressure

If they push back or ask you to "meet in the middle" too early:

"I understand. The number I shared reflects the market and the value I will bring in the first year. I am very motivated to make this work, so I am hoping we can get closer to 125,000 USD. What is possible on your end?"

You stay friendly, restate the reason, and keep the question with them.

Script 4: Negotiating beyond base salary

When base will not move, pivot to the rest of the package:

"I hear that base is set. If that is firm, would you be open to a signing bonus of 15,000 USD, or to additional equity? Either would help me get to the number I had in mind, and I am ready to move forward."

This opens up total compensation, which often has more give than base.

Script 5: Responding to a flat no

If the answer is a firm no on money, turn it into a future plan:

"I appreciate you being straight with me. Could we agree on a six-month review with a defined target, so there is a clear path to revisit compensation once I have shown results?"

A no on today's number can still become a yes on a timeline.

Script 6: Asking for a raise in your current role

For an internal raise, lead with delivered value:

"Over the past year I have led the redesign and grown the channel by 30 percent. Based on that impact and the market range for this role, I would like to discuss moving my salary to 98,000 USD. How do we make that happen?"

See asking for a raise for the full approach.

The three rules behind every script

  1. One number, not a range, when you make a real ask. Ranges get rounded down.
  2. One reason, tied to value, never to personal need.
  3. Stop talking after the ask. The next person to speak often concedes.

The takeaway

Great salary negotiation comes down to a few well-rehearsed lines: deflect early, counter with one number, hold it warmly, pivot when base is capped, and turn a no into a timeline.
