JP Morgan salary negotiation works, but only on the parts of the offer the bank is willing to write down. Base salary moves inside the range printed on the job posting, the corporate title can move if you argue it with evidence, and a sign-on bonus is the usual way to cover what you leave behind. The annual bonus is discretionary, so it is not a number you can negotiate. Counter once, with a figure inside the posted range and a reason, and put any guaranteed money into the sign-on.

What a JP Morgan offer is made of

Most US offers from JPMorgan Chase, whether for a software engineer in Manhattan, an associate in Jersey City or an analyst moving to Plano, have the same four parts. Each one has a different owner inside the bank and a different amount of room.

Part of the offerWhat decides itRoom to negotiateWhat to ask for
Base salaryThe posted range for the role and locationInside the range, rarely above itA specific number in the upper half of the range
Corporate title (Analyst, Associate, Vice President)Leveling during interviewsSome, with evidence of scopeBeing considered at the next title
Annual incentive compensationFirm, business and individual performance, after year endNone in writingNothing directly. Ask for sign-on instead
Sign-on bonus and relocationRecruiter and hiring manager approvalThe most flexible partWhat you forfeit by leaving, plus moving costs

JP Morgan's own postings say this plainly. A Software Engineer III role in New York listed base pay of 118,750 to 150,000 dollars a year, and said eligible roles may receive discretionary incentive compensation "paid in the form of cash and/or forfeitable equity." Discretionary means it is decided after you have done the work, and forfeitable means any part paid in stock can be lost if you leave before it vests.

How to use the posted salary range in a JP Morgan negotiation

New York requires employers with four or more employees to put a good-faith pay range in the posting, and New Jersey, California, Illinois, Colorado and Washington have similar laws. That covers the bank's biggest US hubs in Manhattan and Jersey City, and any role that could be done from a covered state. The range is your best piece of information, and also the boundary the recruiter will hold.

Here is the arithmetic on that New York posting. The range runs from 118,750 to 150,000 dollars, so the midpoint is 134,375. Say the offer comes in at 125,000. That sits 20 percent of the way into the range. A counter at 142,000 puts you about 74 percent of the way in, which is a reasonable place to land for someone with more experience than the posting asks for, and it is still a number the recruiter can approve without an exception. Asking for 160,000 would put you above the range, and on a posted band the answer to that is usually no.

The salary range calculator does this for any posting: enter the range and the offer, and it shows where you sit and which counter keeps you inside the band. If you want the reasoning behind each point in the range, the guide on negotiating salary when the range is posted covers it, and the pay transparency law map shows which states require a range at all. Postings for roles in Texas, Ohio, Delaware or Florida are not required by state law to show one, so ask the recruiter for the band directly.

Is the JP Morgan bonus negotiable?

Not the annual one. Incentive compensation at JP Morgan is decided after the performance year by the firm, your business and your manager, and junior offers usually say only that you are eligible. A recruiter cannot promise a number they do not control, so pushing on it wastes the one counter you get. Senior laterals sometimes receive a stated target or a first-year guarantee, but that is a decision made for the role, not a concession you can usually win by asking.

The useful move is to translate the bonus into money that is written down. If the bonus you would have earned at your current job pays out in the next few months, that bonus is a loss you take by resigning, and it belongs in your sign-on request. The sign-on bonus calculator adds the bonus and any unvested stock you forfeit and turns it into a make-whole figure before and after withholding.

How to negotiate a JP Morgan offer if you are leaving another bank

Banks pay part of senior bonuses in deferred stock, and leaving usually means forfeiting the unvested part. That is the language in JP Morgan's own postings, and it is standard across the industry. If you are moving from another bank, list every deferred award that would be forfeited, with its vest date, and ask JP Morgan to replace it. The same list works for a Goldman offer, where the Goldman Sachs salary negotiation guide shows the posted base ranges by title. Recruiters expect this request from experienced hires and need the paperwork to approve it, so bring your award statements to the conversation rather than a rough total.

If you are leaving a tech company instead, the same logic applies to RSUs that would vest in the next twelve months. Put the offers side by side at the tenure you expect with the job offer comparison calculator, because a JP Morgan offer with little stock can look close to a tech offer in year one and fall well behind by year three. Once vests start landing in your account at either employer, holding everything in one ticker is a real risk, and some people move part of each vest into a basket of stocks they weight themselves so that one share price does not decide their finances.

Can you negotiate your corporate title at JP Morgan?

Sometimes, and it is worth more than any base increase. Pay ranges, bonus pools and promotion timing all hang off the corporate title, so an offer as Associate for someone who has been doing Vice President work costs years, not dollars. If you think you were leveled low, ask how the decision was made and what evidence would put you at the next title. Bring specifics: team size, budget you owned, systems you ran. If the title will not move, ask for a six- or twelve-month review written into the offer. The job title negotiation guide and level value calculator prices what a title step is worth over four years.

What else moves in a JP Morgan offer

  • Relocation. Moving to New York or Jersey City from elsewhere in the US is expensive, and relocation support is easier to approve than base. Ask for a figure, not "help with the move", and check the repayment terms. The relocation package calculator sizes the ask, including the tax gross-up.
  • Start date. If your current bonus pays out in a few weeks, a later start can be worth more than any sign-on you could negotiate. Ask for it.
  • Remote work. JP Morgan moved most employees back to the office five days a week in 2025, so a remote arrangement is rarely on the table. Commuting cost is a fair reason to push base toward the top of the range, though.
  • Vacation. Some experienced hires ask for more paid time off to match what they leave behind. It is worth a line in the email, not a separate round.

The email to counter a JP Morgan offer

Send it after the written offer arrives. One email, one number per lever, a reason for each.

Hi [name], thank you for the offer for [role]. I am excited about the team and would like to get to a yes. Given my [years] of experience with [specific systems or products], I was expecting base pay closer to [number], which sits inside the posted range for the role. I would also be leaving about [amount] in bonus and unvested stock at my current employer. If JP Morgan can set the base at [number] and add a sign-on bonus of [number], I am ready to accept this week. Thanks again, [your name]

Asking rarely costs the offer. In Fidelity's 2022 survey of young professionals, 85 percent of those who negotiated got at least part of what they asked for, and 58 percent took the first offer without asking. Offers get pulled after ultimatums and invented competing offers, not after one professional counter.
