Stripe salary negotiation works, but the three parts of the offer move very differently. Base salary sits inside a band the posting prints, so it has a ceiling you can see. The RSUs are shares in a private company, valued at the price of the last employee tender offer, which in February 2026 put Stripe at 159 billion dollars. The sign-on bonus is the part recruiters move most readily. Counter once, with a base inside the band, a question about the share price behind your grant, and a sign-on sized to what you leave behind.

Does Stripe negotiate salary?
Yes, though candidates are often told otherwise. Rora, a negotiation firm that works Stripe offers, writes that Stripe claims to have a no-negotiation policy and that this is not what it sees in practice: it reports moving every component of Stripe offers, with the signing bonus the most negotiable. Rora sells negotiation help, so weigh that claim accordingly, and compare what salary negotiation coaching services charge before you pay a share of your raise for it. Candidate threads on Blind tell a similar but more mixed story. One engineer reported that Stripe would not move the stock but raised the base and added a 10 percent sign-on paid over two years.
The pattern behind both accounts is the same. Stripe pays at the top of the market for its levels, so the recruiter starts from a strong number and pushes back on the first ask. Rora also notes that Stripe recruiters tend to argue against negotiating before they ask to see competing offers, and only request the breakdown once you have made the case. That is a signal to come prepared with one written alternative and a specific number, not a general request for more.
What Stripe posts as salary ranges
Stripe's public job board listed 722 postings when we read it on October 23, 2026. Twenty of them print a salary line in the posting text, mostly roles in Seattle, South San Francisco and New York, where state law requires a range. Each one says the range is base salary only, with equity, a company bonus or commission possibly on top. The software engineering bands repeat, which tells you how the levels are laid out.
| Posted base range | Postings with exactly this range | Titles on the board | Top divided by bottom |
|---|---|---|---|
| 156,800 to 235,200 | 5 | Software Engineer, South San Francisco and Seattle | 1.50 |
| 190,400 to 285,600 | 2 | Software Engineer, Seattle; Senior Software Engineer, New York | 1.50 |
| 206,086 to 285,600 | 5 | Senior Software Engineer and infrastructure Software Engineer, Seattle | 1.39 |
| 274,456 to 334,600 | 1 | Business Systems Architect (Tax), South San Francisco | 1.22 |
| 175,200 to 262,800 | 1 | Product Designer, New York | 1.50 |
Two things follow. The most common engineering band is wide: the top is 1.5 times the bottom, about 78,000 dollars of room. And a senior band tops out at 285,600, so a base counter above that number is a request for a different level, not a better offer at the same one. If your posting has no range, ask the recruiter for it in writing. Our salary range calculator shows where an offer sits once you have the numbers.
How to value Stripe RSUs at the tender price
Stripe is private, so the RSU number on your offer is a dollar amount converted into units at a share price the company chooses. Employees sell through company-organized tender offers, not on a stock exchange. The last two moved a long way. The February 2025 tender valued Stripe at 91.5 billion dollars. The February 2026 tender, announced in Stripe's annual letter, valued it at 159 billion, a jump of about 74 percent. Stripe has handled employee equity this way for years: in 2023 it raised 6.5 billion dollars partly to cover employees' tax withholding on their equity awards.
The conversion price matters more than the headline. Here is what a 400,000 dollar four-year grant looks like depending on the price used and what the next tender pays.
| Grant converted at | Units, as a share of the 2025-price units | Value if the next tender is flat with 2026 | Value if the next tender is 25 percent lower |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 tender price (159B) | 58 percent | 400,000 | 300,000 |
| 2025 tender price (91.5B) | 100 percent | about 695,000 | about 521,000 |
No recruiter will hand you the 2025 price today, and the table is not a suggestion to ask for it. It shows why the question is worth asking. Ask, in writing, what price per share converts your grant and what the most recent tender paid. If the grant was set at a price above the last tender, that gap is a reason for more units. If it matches the tender, you know what the number means and can compare it with a public offer.
Then decide what a share you cannot sell freely is worth to you. A vested Stripe RSU waits for the next tender, and how much each employee can sell is set by the company. Put a discount on it you can defend. If the competing offer pays in public stock, that value moves with a ticker you can study. Before you trade one for the other, run a fundamentals summary and backtest for that ticker so you know what you are actually comparing against. The OpenAI offer calculator and the Databricks offer negotiation calculator both run this exact math for private-company RSUs against a public offer, quarter by quarter.
What moves in a Stripe offer, lever by lever
| Lever | How much it moves | What to bring |
|---|---|---|
| Sign-on bonus | Most often, by the accounts we found | The unvested stock and bonus you forfeit by resigning, in dollars |
| Base salary | Inside the posted band | Your position in the band and one specific reason for the higher number |
| Level | Rarely after the offer, sometimes before | Scope you have owned that matches the next level's posting |
| RSU units | Hard, but a written competing offer helps | A competing grant in dollars and its vesting, plus the price question above |
| Start date and relocation | Usually easy | A date that lets your current equity vest and a moving estimate |
The sign-on is the cleanest place to land money Stripe will not put in base or stock. Size it to something concrete. If your current employer vests 60,000 dollars of RSUs in the four months after your start date, that number is the ask, and it is easy for a recruiter to defend internally. Check the repayment clause before you sign. Most sign-ons are repaid if you leave inside 12 months, and the signing bonus negotiation page shows the terms worth asking about.
How much should I counter a Stripe offer?
Counter to a base around the 75th percentile mark of the posted band, unless you are already above it. On the 156,800 to 235,200 band, that is about 215,600 dollars. An offer at 175,000 has roughly 40,000 dollars of room before you reach that mark, and asking for it inside a range Stripe published is a reasonable request rather than a reach. Then name one RSU figure tied to your competing offer and one sign-on figure tied to what you forfeit. Three numbers, three reasons, one email. The counteroffer calculator sets how far above the offer each number should sit.
Without a competing offer, keep the base counter and the sign-on, and drop the equity ask to a single question about the conversion price. A candidate with nothing else on the table who asks for more stock usually gets the push-back Rora describes. A candidate who asks a precise question about the price behind the grant usually gets an answer, and sometimes more units.
The email to counter a Stripe offer
Hi [name], thank you for the offer. I am excited about the team and I want to get to a yes. The posted range for this role is [min] to [max], and the offer sits at [percent] percent of it. Given [one specific reason], I would like to ask for a base of [amount]. Could you also confirm the price per share used to convert the RSU grant, and the most recent tender price? I hold a written offer from [company] with [amount] in public RSUs over four years, so I would ask for a grant of [amount]. Finally, I would ask for a sign-on of [amount] to cover the [stock or bonus] I forfeit by resigning. With these changes I am ready to sign this week.
Questions people ask about Stripe offers
Is Stripe's salary negotiable for new grads?
Less than for experienced hires. New grad and early-career bands are standardized, so the base usually moves little. The sign-on and the start date are the realistic levers. A competing written offer from a comparable company is the one thing that tends to move the package, and it moves the sign-on before anything else.
Does Stripe match competing offers?
Sometimes, partially. Accounts from candidates and from Rora describe Stripe pushing back first and asking for the competing breakdown only after you make the case. Share the total, the vesting and the deadline in writing, and ask Stripe to close a specific gap rather than to match the whole package.
Can Stripe rescind an offer if I negotiate?
It is rare. Offers get pulled after ultimatums, invented competing offers or repeated rounds, not after one professional counter. In Fidelity's 2022 survey, 85 percent of young professionals who negotiated got at least part of what they asked for. Our guide on negotiating two job offers at once covers the order of calls.
If you hold a Stripe offer now, paste it into Counteroffer with the posting and any competing offer. It places the base in the band, values the RSUs at the discount you choose, picks the lever worth pulling and writes the counter email for you. Start your negotiation plan before the deadline, not after it.
